Special Education
Special Education is a customized learning approach designed to meet the unique needs of children with a disability. As a district our goal is to ensure that all students are provided a supportive and meaningful educational experience. Special Education students maintain plans called Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), that outline the specific services, supports, and accommodations for the student to access the learning environment.
Special Education services are mandated by state laws and by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a federal law. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act specifically outlines the following parameters:
- Assures all children with disabilities are provided a free, appropriate, public education designed to meet their unique needs
- Protects children’s rights and the rights of their parents/guardians
- Assists state and local districts in providing education that assesses students’ strengths and weaknesses and assures the effectiveness of educational efforts
If you are interested in learning more regarding the eligibility process or requirements to access Special Education Services please contact your child’s designated school.
Special Education Delivery Plan
504 Plans
In accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, all schools are prohibited from discriminating against students with disabilities. Specially, Section 504 sets minimum standards for providing related services and aids to students with disabilities that substantially limit a major life activity. All accredited Iowa Schools must comply with Section 504. Additionally Section 504 applies to all elementary, secondary, preschool, and adult education students.
For more information on the consideration of a 504 plan for your child, please communicate with your child’s Principal. The Principal will take appropriate steps to convene a team of individuals who are knowledgeable about your child to determine, based on available evaluation data, if a 504 Plan is appropriate for your child.
