Thank you for your interest in a substitute teaching position with the Mason City Community School District!  In order to be a substitute teacher in the state of Iowa, you must be licensed through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BOEE) with either a regular teaching license, a Substitute License, or an Iowa Substitute Authorization.  Once you have obtained a license or Authorization, you can complete an application on our district website for a Substitute Teacher position.

Requirements for obtaining a Substitute Authorization:

  • Have one of the following:  Associates/Bachelors (or higher) degree or 60+ hours of college credit or Paraeducator Certificate
  • Complete BOEE approved Substitute Authorization Course 
  • Complete the BOEE application and obtain the actual Substitute Authorization certification (includes a complete background check)

A self-paced Substitute Authorization Course is now available on the AEA Online Learning System.  This course allows participants to start any time and complete it at any pace.  Click on the link below for more information & to register:

Once you have completed the NIACC or AEA course, you need to apply for the actual Substitute Authorization certificate, using the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BOEE) website:

Once you have obtained a license or Authorization from the BOEE, you can complete an application on our district website for a Substitute Teacher position on our Careers Portal.
